Spending Fail

My phone has been giving me grief for several months now. David's has been driving him nuts too. Two nights ago he dropped his phone and the outside display went totally blank. It was the final straw.

So yesterday this happened:
David got a black one. They are beautiful.

Yes, I did just write a post about not spending any money this month. No, the irony of the situation is not lost on me.

Furthermore, I found the following in my drafts folder just the other day. I wrote it about two years ago. It's the perfect thing to round out my little moment of phone & financial hypocrisy.
I’ve been due for a cell phone upgrade for almost three years now. Verizon is sending me emails and flyers practically begging me to come in and use the $100 credit I’ve earned by hanging onto my little Chocolate for so long.  And, quite frankly, it’s time. My phone is dying a slow and tragic death.

Here’s the problem: I have zero interest in having internet access on my phone. I don’t want a Blackberry or a Droid or even an iPhone. (Ok, maybe a little bit I want an iPhone, but mostly so I can play Word Fu, which I already play on my iPod, so why be redundant?) It might be nice to have a sleek, fancy phone, but they won’t sell me a smart phone if I don’t also add a data package to my current cell plan. And I have no intention of doing that.

For one, I still get a discount through Verizon from a previous employer. If I change my plan, I lose the discount. Not only would I be paying more for the data package, I’d be paying more just for regular calls and texts. I am cheap, so no thank you.

For another, I don’t want to become one of those people. You know the ones. They check Facebook every five minutes. They are constantly looking stuff up. They can’t stop playing with their phones long enough to have a normal, uninterrupted face-to-face conversation. Forgive me, but that kind of behavior is a rude. And I don’t want to get sucked into it. I like being unplugged when I’m out of the house.  I like that I’m not totally addicted to using my phone. I like that I have not yet become Ryan Howard at trivia night.
Oh, past Jen. You beautiful naive sophisticated newborn baby.

For the record, I now have data on my phone plan, and Verizon finally figured out that my discount shouldn't apply anymore since I left that employer almost five years ago. (They're clearly on the ball with that kind of thing.) I still have no intention of becoming one of those people; my feelings about phones and socializing have not changed. And the "no spending money" thing is still on. We just made a teeny exception this one time. Besides, Word Fu is awesome, and you know I plan to Instagram the heck out of my life.

    1. As long as you don't compulsively check your phone while I'm talking to your face, we can totally still be friends. That's right. My love is conditional. What.

  2. I am a bit of a compulsive Facebook-checker on my iPhone these days, but that's mostly because I have no life at the moment. I never wanted to become "one of those" either. Call me an old lady, but I haven't even joined instagram yet, despite all my friends and sisters telling me I need to and scolding me that I haven't by now.. Maybe once I have a cute baby to take endless pictures of. Haha. I was slow to join FB too, though. Anyway, iPhones are incredible and amazing for many more reasons than just social media, I promise. Mine has literally changed (and saved - no joke) my life in every good way possible. There are some bad things it's done to my life as well (shorter attention span), but overall, I am so grateful for this modern piece of technology that allows me to have the world at my fingertips.

    Longest comment ever.

And also, thank you for never using hashtags again in a blog post. Haha!

    1. I think there's a difference between checking your phone a lot and checking your phone a lot when you are with people. And you're right: it'll be nice to have all those helpful, legitimately useful apps on hand. Although it still remains to be seen how much I end up actually using them...

  3. So many comments!

I love the Parks & Rec reference, because, duh.
My husband and I still have non-smart phones with no data packages and I love it... 85% of the time. I am afraid we'd become cellphone addicts with smartphones and I agree that A LOT of people have terrible cellphone etiquette. Also, we're cheap. But man, 15% of the time I do long for a fancy iPhone. Someday.

    1. I love that you caught that. That show is my spirit animal.

David and I spent the first evening of iPhone ownership on our respective phones, not talking to each other for an hour. We were both appalled at ourselves afterward, so I don't think that will be happening again. Fingers crossed we don't get sucked in.

    2. We did that too the night we got ours. Got in an argument about it a week later, decided no phones while we're together, and life is as it should be again :)
