#4 of 15: Ostriches!

One night last week, David and I decided we needed to get ourselves an ostrich egg. I'm a little fuzzy on how that conversation went down, but it culminated in the decision to hit up the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch on Saturday.

Best idea ever.

Maybe not the best timing for it, since we got there around one in the afternoon and it was hot as blazes outside. And maybe our execution was flawed, since we didn't think to bring sunscreen, hats, water, or the stroller with us. We pretty much just packed up the girls and went.

Still, it was totally worth the hour drive. Once we purchased our ostrich egg--which was, of course, the entire point of the adventure--we decided to see what else there was to see. For five bucks each (the girls were free) we got to feed ostriches and goats, tiny deer and donkeys, ducks and prairie dogs, and rainbow lorikeets.

I'm not gonna lie: it's a little sad to think of all those animals begging for food in the hot hot sun. But at the same time, they all looked healthy and clean and well cared-for, which impressed me. My love of zoos is well-documented, but I always worry about roadside attraction animals. They're often so sad and neglected. These ones, however, seemed pretty content. Kudos to the ostrich farm people. Even the "wall of goats" was more entertaining than depressing.

Silly goats.

All told, we had a surprisingly good time, got some fun pictures, and Margot only cried for the last twenty minutes of the drive home. There are worse ways to spend a Saturday.

If you live in the area, I highly recommend swinging down and checking it out. Just, you know, maybe not in July.

Also, I totally wore my mustard skirt. That makes 4/15. Another semi-abandoned project back on the road to completion. Woo!
